PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To print characters or the like of the same size even at an acceleration/deceleration time as at a target speed. SOLUTION: A comparison circuit 34 compares a present paper feed speed (v) with a reference speed for changing a dot constitution of a font (300 feet/ min.). A latch circuit 36 takes in a comparison output of the comparison circuit 34 in accordance with a mark detection signal and holds the output until a next mark detection signal. A character pattern generation circuit 38 adopts the dot constitution in accordance with holding data of the latch circuit 36. A discharge clock generation circuit 40 generates discharge clocks of a cycle corresponding to a value obtained by dividing a dot intervalΔin a paper feed direction of the dot constitution designated by the holding data of the latch circuit 36 by the paper feed speed (v). A printing head 12 discharges ink drops towards a paper 10 for dots to be printed at a timing conforming to the discharge clocks of the circuit 40.
