An endless textile or wire cloth 4 in passing from a guide roll 6 to a guide roll 7 forms a plane portion sealed by rubber or like strips 11 to end walls 10a, b which together with a wall 10 and the plane portion of the cloth form a supply box 9 to which a suspension of filter aid (including fibres) is supplied at 12. The height to which the suspension rises is determined by the quantity and fineness of the filter aid. The liquid from the suspension is received in a trough 13 provided, at its edge adjacent the guide roll 6, with a scraper 14, and is discharged at 19. The cloth 4 with filter aid layer 16 passes around a conventional perforate drum 2, to the interior of which vacuum may be applied, rotating in a vat 1 to which liquid to be filtered is supplied at 15. A layer of residue 17 is formed on the layer 16, and the two are removed from the cloth 2 by a smooth roll 5 covered, e.g. by brass or rubber.
