PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To conduct judgement accurately and quickly regardless of the form in which a vehicle is at rapidly decelerating condition. SOLUTION: To make judgement of the rapid decelerating condition of a vehicle, sensing is made for the frequency N of the acceleration G exceeding its specified value Go within a certain period after H has exceeded the trigger value Gtrig (Step 106) or the time T until the cumulated valueΔVt of G attains the specified valueΔVo. When a high speed collision or the like. occurs, the acceleration varies vibratorily, and N becomes greater than the threshold Nth- when a slant collision occurs, the time T becomes smaller than the threshold Tth. Therefore, N or T is compared with the threshold Nth, Tth to serve for judging the collisional condition (Step 108), and when the judgement is such that the collision is as large as requiring spreading of the air bag, the change rate of the cumulated valueΔVt is enlarged (Step 110).
