PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a selective hydrogenation catalyst for acetylene which is highly stable and selective and also is hardly inactive. SOLUTION: This selective hydrogenation catalyst is spherical or in the form of an extruded product, and contains palladium, the group IB metal of the element periodic table and alumina. The weight ratio of the group 1B metal for palladium is 0.4-3. The percentage of at least, 80% of the palladium and that of at least, 80% of the group IB metal are present in the volume of the surface layer part of the catalyst defined by the spherical or the cylindrical surface represented by a radius r1 corresponding to the average radius of catalytic sphere or the catalytic extruded product, and by the spherical or the cylindrical surface represented by a radius r2 equal to at least, 0.8 r1.
