PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form the membrane consisting of layers each of which is uniform in thickness and localized in the vicinity of the surface of a support and also, well joined to the support. SOLUTION: In this formation, the composite membrane consists of continuous layers which are formed from an oxide selected from zeolites, silicometalates, mesoporous oxides and microporous oxides and each of which has an adjusted thickness and is localized mainly on the surface of a porous support. This formation comprises at least two stages, namely, a stage for forming a gel mainly localized on the surface of the porous support by continuously allowing the support to contact with two incompatible liquids contg. agents required for forming the gel and a stage for converting the resulting gel into the desired oxide.
