The counter has evaporator tubes (24) passing through on its lower side with an insulating layer (26) to reduce thermal losses and an additional vertical evaporator (28). Between the bottom of the chest and the insulating layer over the whole width of the bottom are guide channels (34) which have outlets to the top of the chest on both long sides of the chest. At least on one long side of the chest near the outlets is a fan (40) which can circulate cooled air over the foodstuffs and through the channels. There is a transparent sheet (18) over the chest, enclosing the working plate (20) and the additional evaporator.
