The sheet feeding device has a support surface for a sheet stack, displaced relative to a sheet feed head (30), for extracting the top sheet from the stack, via a displacement mechanism. The movement control for the displacement mechanism responds to the detected position of the top sheet relative to the sheet feed head, indicated via an edge sensor, to provide a control signal at regular time intervals for displacing the support surface.
