An alarm system for monitoring a door handle assembly comprises one or more remote units (1), each associated with a respective door handle assembly and a control unit (2). Each remote unit (1) has a handle operation detection means (10) and a signal generation means (14) for generating a warning signal which is transmitted to the control unit (2). Upon reception at the control unit (2), alarm means (26) associated with the control unit (2) generates a warning.
