Described herein is a method in which a compound that includes an isocyanate group and a compound that includes a hydroxyl or thiol group are allowed to react in a fluid that is a gas at STP but which is held at a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure such that it is a liquid or a supercritical fluid. Optionally, one or more cosolvents and/or a catalyst system can also be present. The mixture that includes the reactants, the fluid, and the reaction product of the reactants is also provided.
