Hydraulic shock absorber for controlling damping force

The shock absorber comprises a cylinder (2) in which a hydraulic liquid is enclosed, and a reservoir (6) which contains a gas together with the hydraulic liquid. A piston (3) which is slidable in the cylinder, divides the cylinder interior into two first and second chambers (2a,b). A piston rod is connected to the piston at one end, and its other end extends through the first chamber (2a) to the outer-side of the cylinder. There is a first connecting passage (7) in the piston in order to provide a connection between the first and second chamber. A second connecting passage (9) provides a connection between the second chamber and the reservoir. A first non-return valve located in the connecting passage, allows the flow of the hydraulic liquid only in one direction from the second chamber to the first chamber. A second non-return valve (10) which is provided in the second connection passage, allows the flow of hydraulic liquid in only one direction from the reservoir to the second chamber. A main channel (11) provides a connection between the first chamber and the reservoir.
