An ink-jet recording apparatus comprises an ink-jet recording head (6) provided on a carriage (8) which is movable back and forth with respect to a recording medium, an ink cartridge (1) which supplies ink to the ink-jet recording head (6), printing control means (80) for outputting a drive signal to the ink-jet recording head (6) in accordance with printing data, flushing control means (83) for discharging ink unrelated to recording, in order to ensure a normal jet of ink from the ink-jet recording head (6), and control data storing means (87) for storing control data for the flushing control means (83). The control mode of each of the printing control means (80) and the flushing control means (83) can be varied on the basis of the data in ink characteristic data storing means which is provided on the ink cartridge (1) and stores control data corresponding to the properties of ink.
