The machine comprises a machine frame (2) on which a radial slide (14) is fitted and which is adjustable corresponding to the diameter of the roll. A gripper (20) with two jaws (21) is pressable against the cover (D) of the roll (R) by adjusting the radial slide. The jaws are then movable towards one another tangentially in order to make a tunnel-type formation (E) in the cover. A blade slide (30) is movable on a longitudinal guide (24) along a cover line of the roll over its length. A blade (38) is arranged on the blade slide and can be introduced into the tunnel-type formation in order to cut off the cover. The blade slide is radially adjustable in relation to the radial slide, starting from its position in which the jaws locate on the cover. The radial adjustment of the blade slide is controlled from a sensor (27), which fixes the position of the tunnel-type formation made by the jaws.
