In the pneumatic stowing machine for use in mining described in Specification 808,459, the operating piston 15 in the cylinder 16 of the clamping device can be loaded, on at least one side up to a pressure value which completely, or almost completely, cancels out the compressibility of the pressure medium while between the loads directed in opposition to one another there is only a pressure difference sufficient for the contact pressure of the wear discs 7, 8. A pump 25 is connected to the cylinder through a reversing valve 26 and lines 23, 24. At first the piston is subjected to a pressure of 40 atmospheres by way of the line 24 and the wear discs are pressed against the end faces of the cell wheel. Further operation of the pump brings the pressure below the piston up to 150 atmospheres. The valve 26 is then changed over. The space above the piston is then filled with pressure fluid at 110 atmospheres and the effective pressure in the clamping device is reduced to 40 atmospheres. The pressure fluid in both chambers of the cylinder is compressed so that it is practically in elastic and permits no undesired movements of the wear discs away from the wheel. In modifications (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown), the hydraulic pressure is replaced by the action of spring discs and a coil spring respectively.
