The central controlling microprocessors (101) is connected to a PROM (103) containing a control program using a servo control algorithm, and to a SRAM (105). The head (107) moves horizontally over the disc (109) to record or read data, based on an oscillation coil drive (VCM) (111), while a spindle motor (113) rotates the disc. In operation a servo-writer measures the errors in the track position in order to set the correct spacing, and the corresponding servo pattern is entered into the servo data zone of the disc. The microprocessor then calculates the displacement of the head required.
