Goods (1) purchased in a store are located on a check out unit (2) and have the product details scanned (4). The data includes an identification number, price, weight, etc., and is transmitted to an on-line computer (7). The check out unit allows the gross weight of all purchases to be obtained and supplied to the computer. The scanned data provides gross weight values that are summed and used for comparison. If the difference lies within a defined tolerance band the transaction is considered correct. However, if the value difference lies outside either articles have not been registered or have been double entered.
