The machine comprises a winding device (6) which has two pairs of winding pins (63), which are opposite one another each on one side of a middle plane normal to the winding axis (64) and synchronously rotatable, leaving an axial intermediate space between them. They are movable away from the middle plane in opposite directions until they release the casing wound onto them. A gripping mechanism (70) is provided on the winding device which pushes the cover (D) into the axial space for removal. Further devices are provided, with which the cover, after it has been wound around the winding pins, is separable from them through an axial relative movement.
