Detergent composition having improved cleaning power in neutral or acidic medium

Detergent compositions which are formulated for use in wash water at a pH of 7.5 and below are disclosed. The compositions contain at least one anionic surfactant and optional builders and enzymes, and also contain at least one water soluble organic polymer, such as polyethylene glycol, which is miscible with or soluble in the surfactant. The presence of the water soluble polymer leads to enhanced fabric cleaning performance in an acidic to near basic wash medium.
