In the method of optimizing the control of the mass transfer zone in distillation columns by their characteristic areas which are dependent on pressure and heating steam, the temperature is measured on two different theoretical plates in the mass transfer zone of the column. The measured values are compared with one of the characteristic curves of the characteristic areas, which represent the nominal values for the temperature and the distance between the points where the thermometers are installed in the column.
