The invention relates to the nondestructive testing, namely to the means of the ultrasonic thickness gauging, used in the engineering industry, aircraft industry, power engineering and other national economy industries. The purpose of the invention is the increase of the measurement accuracy and the test capacity by introducing the automatic zero adjustment of the range of measurement and the correction signal. The automatic zero adjustment is provided with the help of the adjusted specimen, the thickness value of which is choosed numerically equal to the value of the ultrasound velocity into it. The process of the thickness measurement is divided into three stages: in the first stage is introduced the value of the ultrasound velocity into the material, in the second automatically is calculated and stored the correcting coefficient, in the third is measuring the thickness of the inspected specimen, is made the automatic or manual correction of the numerical scale reference point of the range of measurement.
