Diol(I; R1, R2= C1-3 alkyl) and polyethylene glycol(II; n= 20- 250) having a molecular weight of 1,000-10,000, were copolymerized by satisfying the equation (A) (B) (C) to give the polyethylene naphthalate having a inherent viscosity of 4.5 and improved drawing properties. Thus, 500 parts of dimethyl-2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate, 230 parts of ethylene glycol, 15.5 parts of neopentyl glycol, 15.5 parts of polyethylene glycol were ester-exchanged at 170 deg.C in the presence of 0.1 part of antimony trioxide catalyst, rising temperature to 240 deg.C for 3.5 hours. Obtained compound, 0.1 part of phosphoric acid and 1.5 parts of calcium carbonate were mixed, decreasing the pressure to 3 torr, rising the temperature 287 deg.C, followed by reacting at 290 deg.C, less than 0.5 torr for 3 hours to give the copolymer.
