A fan-jet engine (1) is mounted in a nacelle (12) suspended (10) below the aircraft wing (11). Extensions (5, 9) of the engine hub (4) carry arrays of strong, flexible plastic spokes. These spin to form two parabolic flails (7, 8) in front of the air intakes (14, 2). The intake (2) serving the high pressure compressor (3) has two levels of protection. Flails could be retracted into the main hub and extended only during the relatively low-speed manoeuvres of take-off and landing, when the risk of birdstrike is greatest and stresses on the flails lowest. The hub could contain reduction gearing.
