METHOD FOR REFINING ASPHALT AND COMPOSITION OF IMPROVED ASPHALT

Oil waste is converted to an environmentally safe material by (a) removing its water content (b) neutralising the organic acid content typically with CaO then (c) mixing with a cellulosic material and (d) adding a purified natural asphalt. Hydrated lime can then be added to the product to obtain soil stabilising material or an antistripping agent, e.g. a tertiary amine, added to form a modified asphalt. Also disclosed is the production of a purified natural asphalt from its ores and a method of purifying a natural asphalt.
