PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal element formed by using chiral smectic liquid crystals which hare a high contrast and of which the driving margin is suppressed in the decrease of the contrast in driving. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal element is constituted by holding the liquid crystals 1 exhibiting a smectic phase between a pair of substrates 2 having electrodes 3. The liquid crystal parts are composed of plural smectic liquid crystal layers 1. The regions where the smectic liquid crystal layers 1 exist in the chevron shape at the prescribed angle of inclination with the normal of the substrates 2 and the regions where the smectic liquid crystal layers 1 exist with the angle of inclination smaller than the value of the angle of inclination with the normal of the substrates 2 calculated in accordance with the temp. characteristics of the inter-layer spacings of the liquid crystal layers 1 coexist in these liquid crystal parts.
