The coin validation unit (1) uses the magnetic resonance of the coin (2) to validate it. The validation unit has a flat surface (3) on the top where the coin is placed, and an electronic circuit that generates a magnetic field in coils under the coin. The coin is positioned against a stop (4), and subject to the magnetic field. The magnetic resonance of the coin is compared to known resonances of authentic coins, and a signal emitted to indicate acceptance or rejection. The signal can be a visual or audible signal, either alone or in combination. A green light may be used to indicate acceptance and a red light accompanied by an audible signal to indicate rejection.
