Methods and mechanisms for regulation of macromolecular transport between cells in plasmodesmatal communication with one another are disclosed. Tobacco mosaic virus movement protein (TMV-MP) in wild type and mutant forms is shown and used to affect plant size, carbon metabolism and biomass partitioning. Use of a protein to mediate its own cell-to-cell transport through plasmodesmata is illustrated with wild type and mutant forms of KNOTTED protein from the maize homeobox gene Knotted. |
