The invention relates to an electrical synchronous linear motor comprising a secondary component which has a plurality of permanent magnets arranged in a particular pole grid and comprising a primary component which can be moved in relation to the secondary component, the position thereof in relation to the secondary component being detectable by a travel-measuring system. A mechanical marking with a known reference with regard to the pole grid of permanent magnets is provided on the secondary component to determine a commutation offset in a simple manner when the linear motor is put into operation. The invention also relates to a method for determining the commutation offset of an electrical sychronous linear motor, which method contains one procedural step for determining the distance between the mechanical marking on the secondary component and a predetermined point on the primary component.
