A novel foam containing a cellular, metal salt-crosslinked polymer or copolymer (A) is claimed which is obtained by polymerisation of a monomer charge containing an alpha , beta -unsaturated carboxylic acid and optionally further vinyl monomers, with at least part of the monomer charge being simultaneously foamed and polymerised in presence of a metal salt of the carboxylic acid.
