The disclosure relates to methods of treating alkaline rinse water from washing or cleaning machines, characterised in that: a) the pH value of the alkaline rinse water is lowered by contact with carbon dioxide until the solution ceases to attack a reverse osmosis membrane; at least a proportion of the carbon dioxide source is the gas mixture produced by heat treatment of the fermentation gas produced by anaerobic breakdown of organic substances and/or the gas mixture created by anaerobic breakdown of organic substances; b) the solution thus obtained is subjected to reverse osmosis; and c) the permeate obtained is re-used for rinsing and the concentrate disposed of.
