The method involves starting the engine (1) from cold, summing the HC-emissions downstream of the catalyst (5) during a defined time window after the cold start and storing the summation value. The stored value is compared with a threshold value and a fault signal is triggered if a defined deviation level is detected. The value obtained during the summation step for the first operation of the engine and catalyser is stored as a reference value.
