A master cylinder (10) for a vehicle hydraulic brake system, in which the master cylinder includes a body (12) having a stepped bore (14) formed therethrough and at least one piston (20, 22) disposed within the stepped bore. A plug (34) is preferably permanently fixed to one end of the bore providing for a leak tight seal at the end of the bore. The master cylinder preferably includes a spring assembly (24) having a pin (100) with a longitudinally regular end portion (106) which is retained in a bore (108) of the piston.
