<p>A biopsy device or hand tool (10) for taking a sample of body tissue (120). The hand tool (10) includes a stylus (14) for forming an opening (128) in relatively firm tissue such as the bone cortex (126), and a cannula (22 and 30) formed by a pair of tubes (22 and 30) for cutting and capturing a sample of a less firm tissue, such as bone marrow (122). The stylus (14) is used initially when in the cannula (22 and 30) and is withdrawn from the cannula (22 and 30) after it has carved an opening (128) in the bone cortex (126) larger than the diameter of the outside diameter of the cannula (22 and 30). The cannula (22 and 30) includes an outer elongate tube (30) having a distal end portion (32) with a cutting edge (60) and opening (62) and further includes an inner elongate tube (22) having a distal end portion (24) which also includes a cutting edge (74) and opening (76). The tubes (22 and 30) are rotatable relative to each other, an action which cuts off or at least partially cuts off the tissue connection (134) which still exists to base tissue. Each of the distal end portions (24 and 32) have tapering portions (64 and 88) such that, when the tubes (22 and 30) are rotated relative to each other, each of the tapering portions (64 and 88) close off the opening (62 or 76) of the other tube (22 or 30) to thereby capture the body tissue sample (120) to ensure removal of the sample (120) from the body.</p> |
