An EEPROM is disclosed with a plurality of memory locations in a memory location field. These memory locations can be addressed for the purpose of writing, reading, and erasing by means of word, bit and source lines (WL, BL, SL). The EEPROM is characterised in that the memory locations which can be addressed via a single word line (WL) are divided into a number of groups to each of which a separate common source line (SL) is allocated. The proposed method of commanding the EEPROM is characterised by the fact that writing, reading and/or erasing opetations in memory locations which can be addressed via a single word line (WL) are done by groups.
