The method involves performing the starting procedure by a controller within a predefined starting period. The starting procedure is divided into at least two mutually independent starting processes (S1,S3). There is a flushing phase (S2) between the two starting processes. No fuel is delivered (B) during the flushing phase and the ignition device (G) is switched off. A high, especially maximum, revolution rate of a combustion air fan is maintained during this phase.
