A discharge lamp operating electronic device is provided with a booster circuit which converts DC power supplied from a DC power source into a prescribed operating voltage, a self-excited inverter which converts the operating voltage supplied from the booster circuit into a prescribed high-frequency output, a lamp operating circuit which operates a discharge lamp by converting the high-frequency output from the self-excited inverter circuit into sine waves, and an overload protective circuit which stops the operation of the self-excited inverter when an overload occurs in the operating circuit. The operating efficiency of the filament of a hot-cathode discharge lamp is improved by alternately heating a thermiomic discharge path from four points of the filament, and the voltage at the filament can be easily adjusted. Two or more hot-cathode discharge lamps connected in parallel with each other can be operated by the device. Even when one or more hot-cathode discharge lamps out of them are removed, the device can normally operate the remaining discharge lamp. Therefore, the service life is prolonged and the energy consumption is saved.
