The image transfer method involves transferring a toner image on an image carrier onto an intermediate image transfer element (6) during a first transfer stage. The transferred image is then transferred onto a transfer material (24) during a second transfer stage. The intermediate image transfer element has a surface whose angle of contact with water is at least 70 degrees and whose position in the tribo-electrical sequence is on the positive side compared to the position of the toner when the toner is negatively charged on the image carrier, and on the negative side when the toner is positively charged.
