<p>This invention is a multipiece, interfragmentary, fixation assembly (10) for interconnecting bone fragments across a fracture therebetween. The fixation assembly (10) comprises a first axially elongated fastener (20) having external threading (22) for anchoring the first fastener (20) into the bone substance of the first bone fragment. The first fastener (20) defining a coaxial through bore (25) with internal threading (26) extending along the length thereof. The fixation assembly (10) also includes a second fastener (30) attachable in non-movable relation relative to the second bone fragment. An elongated connector (40) operably interconnects the fasteners (20, 30) such that rotation of the connector (40) draws the fasteners (20, 30) and the bone fragments attached to each into a predetermined compressive relationship relative to each other. A retaining apparatus (50) prevents the connector (40) from inadverteently turning and thereby maintains the predetermined compressive relationship between the fasteners (20, 30) and the bone fragments to promote healing of the fracture.</p> |
