Rapid measurement of biological oxygen demand, with detection of toxic materials in waste water

The unit evaluates especially wastewater biological oxygen demand (BOD) and composition. The reactor (2,3,4) contains micro-organisms (A,B,C) conducting aerobic processes. Reactors in series, pass fluid through, from first (2) to last (4). In each, heat liberated and/or oxygen demand are measured. Also claimed is the method. Bacteria (A,B,C) convert organics, consuming oxygen and evolving heat and biomass. They are conditioned to convert a definite substance or class (F, G, L ; FF, GG, LL). Oxygenated standard solution is supplied, then oxygenated waste water, and finally oxygenated standard solution. At each stage measurements of oxygen take up and heat evolution are made and stored. Comparisons indicate the BOD and composition, and should the results with standard solution differ appreciably, the presence of toxic materials is inferred.
