The system (1) has at least one sensor, a controller, at least one air-bag and at least one ignition circuit contg. an ignition capsule which can be 'closed' by operating switching elements (5,16). Each switching element must fulfil at least two switch states dependent on different criteria when actuated. The operation of the switching elements involves hardware components or assemblies (4, 9) such as a micro-computer (9a) which drive the switching elements and superimposing at least one software command, which is only generated in a rigorously defined functional region of the air-bag system.
