The method involves directing an abrasive belt (68) under mechanical tension along the work surface to be machined and at the same time rotating it around the workpiece. The abrasive belt is guided on both sides of the work surface by at least one guide roller (36) on each and by at least one position variable tensioning roller (66) outside it. The axes of the rollers run almost parallel to that of the surface being abrasively machined.
