The arrangement has a housing (10,12). The housing has an opening corresponding to the magnetic strip surface to be scanned. A carriage (24) is adjustable, linearly guided in the housing (10,12). A magnetic head (18) is pivotally mounted on the carriage (24) and is pivotal about two perpendicular axes. A spindle drive (22) moves the carriage along the opening. The housing (10,12) is divided into two one-piece halves (10,12) in a plane containing the spindle axis, perpendicular to the scanning surface. Bearings (48) are formed in each half (10,12) for the spindle drive (22). The carriage (24) is in threaded engagement with the spindle (44). The carriage (24) is guided to a guide rod (34) located in the housing parallel to the spindle (44) and is also guided to a longitudinal guide (42) formed on the housing. The magnetic head (18) is fastened in a frame. The frame is mounted on a swing to pivot about a first axis. The swing is mounted on the carriage (24) to pivot about a second axis perpendicular to the first.
