A gas discharge vessel for gas discharge lamps consists of an ascending and a descending spiral glass tube parts which are wound in opposite directions around the longitudinal axis of the gas discharge vessel, are joined at one end by a loop, closed at the other end and provided with electrodes. The loop is raised above the spiral glass tube parts in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the gas discharge vessel. It is thus possible to obtain a gas discharge vessel with a spiral whose diameter is substantially smaller than the diameter of the glass tubes.
