The system consists of at least one optical fibre (1), for coupling light in and out of medium (3) being measured or in a fibre casing, which is exposed in a coupling region (7). The optical fibre is transparent for the measurement wavelength in the visible to the IR radiation range. A metal cluster layer (2') is applied to the casing and/or the fibre endface or embedded in the fibre casing. The absorption signal from the medium (3) being measured or the fibre casing, from the metal cluster layer, is amplified using attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy. With this arrangement, using evanescent field in optically less dense test medium, small material concns. can be measured directly using sensors, or in a cuvette in spectrometers.
