The appts includes an outer tubular element, while an inner tubular element is disposed coaxially within the outer tubular element and a device is provided for rotating the inner tubular element about an axis of a vascular vessel. A non-rotating acoustic waveguide is disposed within the inner tubular element coupled to an acoustic transducer located external to the vascular vessel. A device is incorporated for directing the ultrasonic signal from a distal end of the acoustic waveguide through the outer tubular element. The directing device further includes an acoustic reflective surface, which is disposed at a distal end of the inner tubular element. The directing device further comprises an acoustic lens disposed at a distal end of the inner tubular element.
