A scooped recess 21 is formed in the rear cover 20 of a radio handset to improve the ergonomics of the telephone for single-handed operation. The indentation is laterally confined by banks 23, 24 and is such that lateral rocking or listing is avoided when the rear cover is placed on a flat surface. The recess encourages the user to hold the telephone in a position where the user's fingers are placed in the recess and the keys are operated by the thumb. An additional indentation 26 may be provided at the base of the rear cover to accommodate the user's palm. The functioning of the keypad and the processing of the speech signal are also discussed. |
