PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain hydrogen and carbon monoxide with low energy in high yield by introducing water to a molten metal bath containing carbon and reacting carbon with water. SOLUTION: One or more alloys selected from among Fe, Ni, Cr, Co, Mn and Si containing 2-7wt.% of carbon are fed to an electric induction furnace 20 and heated to 1,000-1,750 deg.C by applying an AC current to an electric induction coil 21 to give a molten metal bath 1 containing carbon 2. Then, steam generated by a steamer 10 is introduced from a line 11, a change valve 12 and a line 13 through a steam supply inlet 24 into the molten metal bath 1 and is reacted with the carbon 2 to generate a mixed gas of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The mixed has is discharged from a gas outlet 22 through a line 25 to a hydrogen separator 30 and hydrogen is separated and recovered through a line 31. The other component is sent through a line 32 to a carbon monoxide separator 40 to separate a carbon monoxide gas. |
