Apparatus for use with an internal combustion engine, comprising: -a steam generator for producing steam, -a mixter unit comprising a housing having a steam inlet pipe for introducing steam into the housing from the generator, an air inlet, and an outlet pipe for supplying mixed air and steam to the engine, the said inlet and the outlet pipes having respective openings within the housing which are separated by a gap, characterised in that the size of the said gap is adjustable. The provision for adjusting the size of the gap allows the system to be optimised for maximum efficiency. The gap is preferably adjustable by moving one of the said pipes relative to the other. The gap may be adjustable within the range of 5mm to 30mm but is preferably not adjustable outside the range of 9mm to 16mm. The diameter of the inlet and outlet pipes is preferably between 25mm and 75 mm. |
