A clamping collar for gripping an elongated member 5 such as a prop, comprises a first jaw 8 for bearing against one side of the member, a second jaw 2 for bearing against the other side of the member, a pin 1 on which the first jaw is mounted in such manner that the first jaw can be moved towards and away from the second jaw, a first link 3 connecting one side of the second jaw to one end of the pin, a second link 4 for connecting the other side of the second jaw to the other end of the pin, the two jaws and the two links together serving to embrace the member and rotatably mounted means for spacing the pin at different distances from the face of the first jaw that faces the second jaw. The link 3 is pivotally connected both to the pin 1 and the jaw 2 whereas the link 4 is pivoted to the pin 1 and has its other end formed as a hook for a releasable engagement with the jaw 2. Mounted on the pin 1 between the two links are a pair of arms 9 which carry the movable jaw 8 which is serrated. The jaw 8 is of tapering cross-section and the arms 9 are slotted to enable it to move. Between the arms 9 is a hub having two identical cams 7<SP>1</SP>, the cams forming the means for varying the spacing of the jaws and bearing upon a face of the jaw 8 ; rotation of the cams 7<SP>1</SP> urge the jaw 8 into engagement with one face of the member 5, the other opposite face of which is engaged by the jaw 2. Movement of the jaw 8 is limited by a stop 10 projecting from an upper portion of the jaw 8. In a modification the cams instead of being of the shape shown are of square crosssection and are eccentrically arranged so that each face is a different distance from the hub. |
