A method and an apparatus processing a VISS(VHS Index Search System) screen is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a play signal processing unit(12), a video signal processor(14), a displaying unit(16), a VISS mark detector(18), a frame processing controller(20), an edited frame recording driving unit(26), and a frame data storing unit(24). A video recording system processes a video tape(10) having a number of programs recorded by a VM(VISS mark) recording mode. At an initial portion of the programs of the video tape(10), one frame of each of the programs is read. Each of read frames is reedited and recorded at the video tape(10). According to the VISS frame control signal, the VISS edited frame is displayed. By using the VISS edited frame, a target program setting is possible.
