The nickel powder allows the oxygen gas generated on a positive electrode and reaching the surface of a hydrogen storage alloy electrode to quickly react to the hydrogen stored in the hydrogen storage alloy on the electrode surface to be reduced to water and suppresses the rise of the battery internal pressure. The nickel powder is manufactured when nickel carbonyl vapor is thermally decomposed, and it has a three- dimensional chain-like structure such as the carbon black structure.
