PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lower a driving voltage and to facilitate handling by applying the exit light from an electrooptic modulating means to an optical branching means having anisotropy in transmittance and increasing the ratio of a change in the polarized light of the exit light. SOLUTION: The exit light from the electrooptic modulator 3 is made incident further on the optical branching means (beam splitter) 7 having the anisotropy in the transmittance, by which the amplitude ratio|Ex'|/|Ey'|of the x component (P polarized light), y component (S polarized light) from the electrooptic modulator (electrooptic material) 3 in the optical branching means 7 is made into Tx/Ty times. Then, if the value of Tx/Ty is larger than 1, the degree of the polarized light to retardation is increased by providing the modulator with the optical branching means (beam splitter) 7 having the anisotropy in the transmittance. As a result, the driving voltage V necessary for obtaining the polarization state may be dropped in the optical modulator 3.
